MALCOM MCLEAN: A TALE OF THE SHIPPING CONTAINER.

  • 18 March 2019
  • By Admin

MALCOLM MCLEAN, A TRUCK DRIVER, CREATED THE MODERN SHIPPING CONTAINER, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SIGNS OF GLOBALIZATION AND THE PROVIDER OF EVERY SINGLE ITEM WE USE IN OUR DAILY LIVES. THIS YEAR, MCLEAN’S MAGIC BOX IS CELEBRATING ITS 63RD YEAR.

Amphoras were used for the transportation of wine and other food stuff between 1500 BC and 500 BC by both the ancient Greeks and the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean region. In the modern world, amphoras were replaced with steel boxes, which we call containers. The reason why containers take a vital place in our lives is their suitability for different transportation modes.

A REVOLUTION IN WORLD TRADE

What McLean achieved can be considered a revolution in world trade, even though his name is rarely mentioned in the history books. Thanks to McLean, we are able to reach a variety of goods in our routine lives. Today, a considerable percentage of world trade is handled by containers. Commercial goods are transported to the different parts of the globe with the help of containers.

In 1937, Malcom McLean spent a whole day offloading cotton bales from his truck in Hoboken, New Jersey. The reason was bales needed to be carried one by one by dockers until they reached the hold of the ship. The slow speed loading and off-loading of those days caused industrial accidents, pilferage risk, and security risks. In addition, if you did not have plenty of goods to fulfill a ship, you would not have had the chance to export your goods. The question of “Why we are spending too much time” created the container.

A DREAM COMES TRUE

McLean had waited for 20 years to make his dream come true. His work, which started by transporting several goods for farmers, became a company in 1955. Then, he sold his company and started to work on his dream.

He converted an Ideal X petrol tanker into a container ship in the Sea-Land company. Ideal X had a deck for 58 containers. The world’s first container ship sailed from the port of Newark in New Jersey, crossed the Mexican Gulf, and arrived at Houston on April 26, 1956. The first transatlantic shipment was realized in 1966. Container transportation minimized the risk of theft, reduced employment costs, and shortened the process of loading and unloading at ports. McLean sold the world’s biggest container transportation company in 1968

THIRD-PARTY LOGISTICS COMPANIES VS. FREIGHT FORWARDERS: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM.

  • 13 March 2019
  • By Admin

WHAT ARE THIRD-PARTY LOGISTICS COMPANIES?

Basically, third-party logistics (3PL) companies are outsourced service providers that cover all or a part of a company’s logistics activities in logistics and supply chain management.

These service providers typically specialize in multi operations such as warehousing and transportation services that can be scaled and customized per customers’ needs.

Third-party logistics companies help move goods, but their focus is not only moving them. They also add several extra services such as storing shipments between the transportation points, processing shipments and taking items from transportation vehicles and packaging them with an invoice per client drop-off, and providing visibility into distribution channels.

WHAT ARE FREIGHT FORWARDING COMPANIES (FREIGHT FORWARDERS/NVOCCS)?

A freight forwarder, forwarder, or forwarding agent, also known as a non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC), is a person or company that arranges transportation for individuals or corporations to get cargo from the manufacturer or producer to a market, customer or final point of distribution channels.

Forwarders contract with a shipping line, or often multiple shipping lines, to move goods. A forwarder does not move goods but acts as an expert in the supply chain link. Carriers can use a variety of shipment types, including vessels, airplanes, trucks, and railroads, and often use intermodal methods for a single shipment. For example, the freight forwarder may arrange to have cargo moved from a plant to a port by truck, to sail to the destination city and then moved from the discharge port to a customer’s door by another truck.

Freight forwarders typically focus and specialize in the more specific logistics functions in supply chain activities instead of trying to optimize the entire supply chain operation. So, the fundamental difference is that freight forwarders have a narrower focus on the transportation side of the supply chain whereas third-party logistics companies have a more broad focus (although this is changing with the constantly-evolving logistics industry.)

WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE WHEN OUTSOURCING LOGISTICS? IT’S REALLY UP TO YOU.

Even though it might be a tough decision to make, whether to work with a third-party logistics company or a freight forwarding company, customers should know their needs, their expectations from these companies in regard to service, and performance. After reviewing the current picture, performing a cost analysis, and evaluating flexibility and service quality, one should consider all of these benefits to help shippers to make the best choice.

WHAT IS DAMAGED CARGO AND HOW TO PREVENT AND HANDLE IT.

  • 19March 2019
  • By Admin

THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT PARTIES HANDLING FULL CONTAINER CARGO DURING THE SHIPMENT PROCESS, FROM THE OVERSEAS FACTORY UNTIL IT IS DELIVERED TO THE FINAL RECEIVING POINT AT DESTINATION.

On a typical international full container shipping route, below are the parties that may physically handle cargo:

  • The supplier/factory which loads the cargo.
  • The local trucker that delivers the cargo to a local warehouse.
  • The local dray company that moves the cargo from the warehouse to terminal.
  • The origin terminal.
  • The transshipment terminal.
  • The arrival port terminal.
  • The customs or customs warehouse (if there is any customs hold).
  • The local trucker at the arriving port for final delivery.

MOREOVER, DURING AN OCEAN VOYAGE AND TURBULENT WATERS, IF CARGO IS NOT SECURED PROPERLY, IT WILL SHIFT.

The most common reasons for cargo damage are water damage, impacts that the container took, and damages due to improper lashing and stuffing.

Water damage may occur due to the below reasons:

1. Condensation inside a container, especially if the container is being stuffed at high humidity temperatures.
2. Temperature changes during the voyage of the vessel may also increase the condensation inside the container, which may cause the cargo to get wet.
3. Water may get inside the container if there are any small holes on it, especially during the voyage if a vessel encounters inclement weather conditions.

Improper lashing and stuffing:

Extremely heavy cargo and uneven weight distribution, improper loading of the pallets, and poor lashing are some of the reasons for cargo damage depending on the cargo type, weight, and pieces. There are so many details when it comes to how to properly stuff a container and properly lash the cargo.

When the container is received at the warehouse, a thorough inspection is needed. Check if there is any visible damage to the container from outside. Once the unloading starts, if there is any visible damage to the cargo, stop the unloading process immediately and notify your carrier and your insurance company, if the cargo is insured.

IN ORDER TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE RISKS OF DAMAGE, OBTAIN CARGO INSURANCE FOR EACH CONTAINER, FOLLOW SIMPLE AND BASIC STUFFING RULES, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WORK, WITH A RELIABLE CARRIER WHO WOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ISSUES.

A team of researchers at Perdue University have developed a method where 90% of plastic waste can be converted into valuable pure polymers, clean fuels, and other useful plastic products. These developments are still in the early stage but are gaining attention from the energy sector as they have the potential to increase the profits of the recycling industry while reducing global plastic waste stock and producing high quality fuels.

THE IMO 2020 CLOUD APPEARS TO BE DISSIPATING AS CARRIER POLICIES ARE ADOPTED.

By Admin

In 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) developed a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Shipping carrier vessels must meet the mandate by limiting bunker fuel to 0.5% sulfur content instead of the 3.5% used today. This, of course, comes with a cost. The costs to become IMO 2020-compliant are too big for ocean carriers to bare alone. For instance, Hyundai has reported scrubber installation costs of $5 to $8 million per ship.
